Mesa wins national economic development award

Mesa’s successful effort to bring First Solar, Inc.’s new solar module fabrication plant to the City has received the Bronze Award by Business Facilities magazine in its 2011 Economic Development Deal of the Year competition.

“The award is national recognition for the wonderful partnerships that have developed between leaders and staff from the City, region, state and the private sectors to bring First Solar to Mesa after a long and highly competitive site search,” City Economic Development Director Bill Jabjiniak said.

Mesa and the other award recipients were selected by a blue-ribbon judging panel of industry experts who reviewed submissions for 23 big-ticket projects across the U.S.

“This cooperative regional effort was able to meet First Solar’s unique build-out, utilities, infrastructure and workforce needs – all within an accelerated timeframe,” Business Facilities Editor-in-Chief Jack Rogers said.  “We congratulate everyone in the Greater Phoenix area who brought this important project to fruition for a job well done.”

First Solar, the world’s largest manufacturer of thin-film solar panels, will occupy approximately 130 acres within Eastmark, the 32-hundred acre site of the former Mesa Proving Grounds acquired by DMB Associates in 2006.  Construction began late last spring and the factory is expected to begin producing solar modules by early 2013.  First Solar is expected to have approximately 600 clean-tech jobs when it opens.  It is anticipated to have a 10-year economic impact of nearly $7 billion while eventually creating nearly 1,700 jobs.
