Rulers of the Prehistoric Skies have landed at AzMNH in Mesa
Tyrannosaurus rex is momentarily distracted from his gory feast by a shadow from above as an enormous winged monster soars over the landscape of the prehistoric Southwest, searching for its next meal. The winged monsters that filled the skies, the mysterious Pterosaurs, have landed at the Arizona Museum of Natural History, 53 N. Macdonald in Mesa. “Rulers of the Prehistoric Skies” is a new exhibition that features a mesmerizing display of ancient flying reptiles brought back from the distant past.
“For 150 million years there really were dragons on this earth, both large and small,” Museum Curator and Paleontologist Dr. Robert McCord said. The exhibition allows you to explore the evolution of flight across different animal groups, and learn about the uniqueness of pterosaur flight and the current ideas surrounding it.
“When you see their wingspans you will ask one question - how did these monsters fly?” Museum Collections Specialist and Paleontologist Gavin McCullough said.
The exhibition features several amazing creatures. Among them:
· Quetzalcoatlus, the largest flying animal ever. The dragon-like dinosaur is a long-necked beast with a wingspan wider than some airplanes.
· Pteranodon, the most famous crested pterodactyl of the Cretaceous Period.
· Comb-toothed shrimp eaters, needle-toothed snatchers, toothless fish scoopers and scavengers. An astounding variety of pterosaurs is revealed along with mysteries about their lives.
· Pterosaurs with headgear. Were the head crests used for steering, display or something else?
