Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport welcomes Spirit Airlines’ first flight

With the help of a water cannon salute and showgirls, Spirit Airlines’ inaugural flight to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport arrived from Las Vegas during a welcoming ceremony late this morning.  Spirit will be offering twice daily non-stop service between Mesa and Las Vegas.

“We are excited to welcome Spirit’s first flight from Las Vegas to Mesa,” Mayor Scott Smith said. “Each new airline and each new destination shows that Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is excelling in the midst of and in spite of the struggling economy.”

In addition to Las Vegas, Spirit will offer daily non-stop service to Dallas-Fort Worth with continuing service to Fort Lauderdale beginning March 22.

“The introduction of our ultra-low fares between Phoenix-Mesa and Las Vegas gives travelers a convenient and affordable opportunity to take advantage of all that both of these destinations have to offer,” says Spirit’s Senior Director of Sales Michael Pewther.  “Our cheap base fares give consumers the opportunity to save money on travel, and our range of optional services for a fee allows customers the freedom to choose only the extras they value.”

Spirit is the second airline to offer commercial passenger service at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.  The airport now serves 33 cities with non-stop service via Allegiant and Spirit Airlines as well as eight more cities with continuous service.

“Gateway has taken a major step into actualizing its planned purpose as a commercial alternative to Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport,” Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Board Chairman and Gilbert Mayor John Lewis said. “With the arrival of Spirit Airlines today, the entire country is warming up to the reality that the valley now has two commercial airports. Much like Los Angeles has both LAX and John Wayne Airport and Chicago has O’Hare and Midway Airport, the Phoenix metropolitan area now has two!”
