Nooks available at the Library for checkout
Thirty-four Nooks are now available to checkout at any branch of the Mesa Public Library. The e-Reader was the first choice of purchase when the Library received a grant from the State Library through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA). E-books are downloadable through the Greater Phoenix Digital Library.
“When we were looking to purchase e-readers for the Library, we wanted to make sure our customers could download popular and current titles,” Mesa Library Director Heather Wolf said. “Connecting to the Greater Phoenix Digital Library is a must because of the selection they offer plus its ease of use.”
The LSTA grant was for $8,050 to purchase e-readers and to provide training and education to librarians and the public. A total of the 38 Nooks were purchase through the Mesa’s Barnes and Noble at Dana Park. They will be used in the following capacity:
· 18 Nooks will have pre-loaded popular titles for circulation.
· 12 Nooks will be empty; allowing patrons the ability to download their own e-books from their computer or laptop from home.
· 4 Nooks will be express; with popular titles and maximum checkout of one-week with no holds.
· 4 Nooks will be reference use for Library staff and will not be available for checkout.
Each Nook will be protected with a screen protector and come in an e-reader cover. They will be housed in a carry case along with a cleaning cloth, a charger and paperwork.
General checkout rules for the Nooks are:
· E-readers are location specific – they must be checked out and returned to the owning library.
· The checkout period is 3 weeks with no renewals.
· Overdue fines are $1.00 per day with a maximum of $10.00.
· Patrons must be 18 years of age or older to check out an e-reader with a valid Mesa Library card.
· A user agreement must be signed each time a patron checks out an e-reader.
· E-readers can be placed on reserve but will not change locations. Patrons will have to pick up at owning branch.
· The cost of replacing the e-reader is $400.00. Each lost or damaged part of the kit will have a smaller replacement charge.
· All Nooks must be returned to the service desk. Upon return, desk staff will check the ensemble for pieces, but not check it in. They will put it on a special shelf for a Library Assistant to check the items for condition erase the unloaded devices and then check the item in. They will ready the item for the next patron.
“With the digital age comes new uses for the Library and I’m glad that we can offer these Nooks for our
customers,” Mesa Library Librarian, Larry Lee said. “We have embraced new technology and are using it for our advantage to increase reading and circulation in our community.”
The Nooks will undergo a one-year pilot program upon which the Library will decide whether or not to make the Nooks a permanent feature. You can check out a Nook starting today. The Mesa Public Library has four branches they are:
